Trump and Reagan are indeed accountability soul brothers. From 1912–99, presidents kept 67% of their promises, but from 1980–88, that rate fell to just 52%. Trump’s penchant for preposterous and often contradictory promises — coupled with his extreme political ineptitude — position him to eclipse the Gipper as our republic’s most profligate promise-breaker. Trumpsters react similarly to Reaganites when it comes to evidence of broken promises: they mostly do not notice, or pretend not to notice. If somehow forced to notice, they tend to deny, excuse, ignore, or forget their leader’s lapses.
