President Trump asked for my ideas

Having inherited my email address from his predecessor, President Trump recently wrote me to ask, “What are your ideas to make America great again?” Here is my reply to the White House:

Recognize that this country never ceased to be great. In fact, our country became great and has remained great through its dedication to liberal ideas, cultural diversity, and the achievements of enlightened statesmen like Washington, Lincoln, Wilson, the Roosevelts, Truman, LBJ and Obama.

Order the appointment of an impartial special prosecutor to nail any Americans who aided & abetted Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Order the appointment of an another impartial special prosecutor to investigate executive branch officials abusing public office to reap private profits (i.e., violations of the Constitution’s emoluments clauses by administration officials).

Concede the existence of objective reality. Commit yourself and your administration to factual discourse. Embrace mainstream science.

Respect free speech and freedom of the press.

Raise the minimum wage.

Support the collective bargaining rights of American workers.

Create jobs, increase labor force participation and lay the foundation for further economic growth through ambitious investments in infrastructure.

Instead of repealing or replacing Obamacare, expand it to achieve universal coverage while containing costs.

Forget about tax cuts; instead, raise income & Social Security taxes on the rich and on big corporations.

Tax capital gains just like other income.

Restrict the mortgage interest deduction to the middle class.

Recommit to multilateral trade deals like TPP & NAFTA that create jobs & reduce the cost of living.

Invest in K-12 public schools & continuing education to help adults adapt to economic change.

Reject private school vouchers. End Title I and IDEA funding for K-12 private schools and redistribute the monies to K-12 public schools.

Confine college financial aid to institutions with reasonable tuition rates (i.e., no subsidies for price-gouging for-profit institutions).

Instead of weakening Dodd-Frank, strengthen it to avert further financial meltdowns.

Protect the environment, fight climate change.

Strengthen & expand NATO and other alliances with freedom-loving countries.

Contain Russian aggression.

Renounce religious bigotry & coordinate with Muslim allies to crush ISIL, Boko Haram, al Qaida and other terrorist groups.

Stop hassling 11 million otherwise law-abiding undocumented residents and create a path to citizenship for them.

Instead of restricting immigration, reform admissions policies to bring in more working-age people with the skills our economy needs.

Maintain budget discipline; instead of squandering anticipated surpluses on giveaways to the rich, use them to eliminate the deficit, pay down the debt, save Social Security and reduce burdens on future generations.
