Dear Federal Elected Officials:
It is time to wage relentless war on ISIL.
You have my full support.
I am ready to make any personal sacrifices needed to obliterate ISIL and ensure that neither my son nor anyone else’s child has to live under terrorism.
Specifically: please draft me, raise my taxes, monitor my communications, regulate my activities— whatever it takes to prevent terrorism and defeat ISIL overseas.
I recognize that public opinion helped shape our current limited engagement in the Middle East. As a student of history, I know it is normal for elected officials to obey public sentiment, but I also know that the greatest leaders lead public opinion, reshaping it to support wise policy.
Neither Lincoln nor Wilson nor FDR wanted to be war presidents, but all three helped rally a reluctant nation to commit fully to armed conflict against evil in their time, and to persevere until the enemy surrendered unconditionally. We need that kind of leadership from you today — not the partial commitment we showed at times in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
No sane person desires to live in wartime or experience armed conflict, but I see no viable alternative at present. ISIL has already killed Americans and many of our allies, including the French, the British and the Turks. Please invoke the NATO alliance and organize a coordinated campaign against ISIL.
Total commitment requires making deals with some devils. During World War II, FDR & Churchill allied with Stalin — one of history’s most murderous and aggressive dictators — to defeat Hitler, who posed a far greater threat. Similarly, I encourage you to forge alliances of convenience with Putin and Assad and any other lesser evils who can help eliminate the greater evil.
It is time to take out the trash. Please find the courage to do whatever it takes to consign ISIL to the dustbin of history along with the Communists and the Nazis.

Postscript: If you’re wondering why I don’t just volunteer for service in the armed forces, the answer is that I am a little too old to do so. I would encourage the armed forces to raise the age cap, loosen the physical fitness requirements and find the right roles for the right people. For example, I’m a good shot and a capable meat shield (big target) — so if that would help the real soldiers (skinny, well-trained kids) kill the enemy, then I’m ready to go. I also have other skills that might apply in certain support roles. Of course, I know it’s unlikely that the armed forces would ever call on me, but my friends and family will affirm that I am in fact crazy/committed enough to serve in any capacity if allowed to do so.
